- Steve Chang, a Stanford University Urology Fellow, won the top two awards at the 2009 Western Section Meeting of the American Urological Association: First Prize in the Joseph F McCarthy Physician/Olympus Gyrus ACMI Essay Contest for his paper entitled " The Impact of Common Medications on Serum Prostate Specific Antigen Levels: Analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and the
James L Goebel Grand Prize for the poster entitled " Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Nephron-Sparing Options in the Management of Small Renal Masses"
- Stanford Urology resident Geoff Sonn’s paper on confocal laser endomicroscopy is featured on the cover of the of the October issue of Journal of Urology. The paper entitled, “Optical Biopsy of Human Bladder Neoplasia With In Vivo Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy” Geoffrey A. Sonn, Sha-Nita E. Jones, Tatum V. Tarin, Christine B. Du, Kathleen E. Mach, Kristin C. Jensen and Joseph C. Liao, reports the first study of in vivo confocal laser endomicroscopy in the urinary tract.
- Hsi-Yang Wu, MD won second prize in the basic science category at the 2009 American Academy of Pediatrics, Section on Urology meeting for the paper, "Neonatal bladder reduction surgery alters brain regulation of voiding."
- We welcome Dr. Hsieh as a new member of our department in the section of
Pediatric Urology.
- A new study led by Joseph Presti Jr., suggests that doctors can be less cautious in treating men at risk of prostate cancer with the drug finasteride. Presti, the Thomas A. Stamey Research Professor in Urology and director of the urologic oncology program at Stanford, is quoted in this HealthDay News article.

Faculty Promotion News
Dr. Joseph Presti, Jr. has been promoted to Professor of Urology,
Stanford University
Dr. Presti,
previously on faculty at UCSF, joined the Stanford Urology
Department in 2000. He has served as the Chief of Urologic Oncology
Section at Stanford since his arrival. Under his leadership, the Stanford
Urologic Oncology Program has evolved into a comprehensive multi-disciplinary
GU oncology program, encompassing Surgical Oncology including
Laparoscopic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, and Medical Oncology.

Donna Peehl, Ph.D. awarded two new grants
from the department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program.
One was an Exploration-Hypothesis Development Award for her
project "Origin of Prostate Cancer-associated Stroma: Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition",
and the other was an Exploration-Resource Development Award to establish
a resource center for primary cultures of human prostatic cells and
derived materials. Dr. Peehl was
also awarded a subcontract from Wake Forest University to participate
in an NIH-funded project entitled "Prostate Specific Antigen and Prostate Cancer Progression".

Zijie Sun is
the one of the recipients of the 5th Annual Stanford Asian American Awards.
This award is given to honor individuals for
their amazing contributions to the Asian American community. Other
recipients include Professor Sanjiva Lele and Professor David Palumbo-Liu.

Cancer Center Opens!
Stanford Cancer Center opened its doors to patients. Many
years in the planning, this state-of-the-art facility is now the home
of the Stanford Urologic Oncology Program.
