29th Dorothy Fenmore Visiting Professorship Lecture

Stanford Department of Urology was honored to host Scott E. Eggener, MD, urologic oncologist and Professor and Chair of Urology at University of California, Los Angeles, as the 29th Dorothy Fenmore Visiting Professor on March 26 and 27, 2026. A nationally recognized leader in the field, Eggener’s work centers on improving the management and outcomes of patients with prostate, kidney, and testicular cancers, with particular focus on prostate cancer screening, imaging, biomarkers, active surveillance, and emerging treatment strategies.

Eggener has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and has helped shape national clinical guidelines through his work with the American Urological Association, National Comprehensive Cancer Network, and American Society of Clinical Oncology. He also serves as Associate Editor (prostate cancer) for the Journal of Urology and has been a visiting professor at more than 20 universities and is the recipient of career achievement awards from the American Urological Association and Society of Urologic Oncology.

Eggener’s visit began on Thursday evening with a special Grand Rounds seminar titled “Dogma, Doubts, and Debunking Myths: Which Are Next.” In his remarks, he examined long-standing assumptions in urologic oncology and encouraged a more critical approach to accepted practices. On Friday, he met with chief residents over breakfast and joined residents for case and research presentations. He also met individually with Drs. Geoffrey Sonn, Alan Thong, Joseph Liao, Kris Prado, Eila Skinner, and Jay Shah.

The visit concluded with the 29th Dorothy Fenmore Visiting Professorship Lecture, “Emotional Toll of Surgical Complications.” In a field often centered on patient outcomes and technical excellence, Eggener brought attention to the emotional impact of complications on physicians, an area rarely discussed in formal academic settings. His remarks opened a candid discussion among faculty and trainees, many of whom reflected on their own experiences. The department later hosted a dinner with faculty and trainees.

The Maxwell J. and Dorothy Fenmore Lectureship on Cancer Research, established in 1988 by the Fenmore family, annually invites leading experts in academic urology and cancer research to share their knowledge with the Stanford community.
