Welcoming Lay Teng Ang and Ruth Belay

We are excited to announce the appointment of Lay Teng Ang, PhD, as an Assistant Professor, and Ruth Belay, MD, as a Clinical Instructor, at the Department of Urology.

Born and raised in Singapore, Lay Teng became a first-generation college student before earning her PhD. from the University of Cambridge. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Genome Institute of Singapore and has been recognized with the Additional Ventures Career Development Award. Her research has garnered support from prestigious institutions, including the Thomas & Stacey Siebel Foundation, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and the Stanford Maternal & Child Health Research Institute.

Her laboratory is dedicated to developing the cellular building blocks to assemble bladder tissues by converting human pluripotent stem cells into urothelial and vascular cells.

Beyond her professional life, Lay Teng has recently discovered a passion for sculpting clay and ceramics, which also helps cultivate her creativity. She enjoys attending classes at a local studio, where she finds inspiration and connection with others who share her interest.

She is thrilled to join Stanford Urology, where she looks forward to establishing a vibrant research program and contributing to our mission in urology research.

Ruth is a recent graduate of our Urologic Oncology fellowship at Stanford Urology and a familiar face to many of us here.

Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Ruth grew up in the United States. She completed medical school and a urology residency at Loma Linda University in Southern California before completing her Urologic Oncology fellowship at Stanford Urology.

During her fellowship, Ruth celebrated a significant personal achievement as well- marrying her best friend, Dadafi Bakuto, and welcomed their daughter, Elim, adding a joyful new chapter to their lives. They love exploring local coffee shops and taking their dog, Eko, to the park, where they enjoy the simple joy of spending time together.

Ruth is passionate about advancing urology through interdisciplinary research, developing innovative clinical solutions, and fostering a culture of advocacy and responsibility.
